…and I’m also at Lady Business discussing Gone Crazy in Alabama by Rita Williams-Garcia with Jodie. Along the way we talk about conflict between women and how it’s portrayed in stories, the different possible reasons why a woman might feel trapped in a marriage, complex sisterly love, and the circumstances where people might (or might not) feel safe speaking up.

Rita Williams-Garcia’s three Gaither sisters novels are without doubt among the best historical children’s fiction I have ever read. Together they paint a thoughtful, generous and nuanced portrait of the years around the Civil Rights movement through the eyes of a smart, complicated girl. I’m so grateful that Jodie encouraged me to read the first of these (and then read the rest of the trilogy with me). Do follow the link for more details about why these books are so great.
