Happy New Year

Wishing you all the very best in 2014 and a lovely New Year’s Eve. My totally rock and roll plans for tonight include watching favourite movies from my childhood and youth in pyjamas with my partner and cats (Clueless? The Neverending Story? The Land Before Time? so many possibilities) while eating good food.
My wishes for 2014 are less about excitement and adventure and more about being spared bad fortune. I know “I hope nothing terrible happens!” is not a very glamorous New Year’s wish, but if you think about it, it isn’t actually a small thing. Maybe this has to do with getting older, or maybe it’s because I’ve had a bit of a hard time this year and have been feeling blue, but lately I’ve been looking at the future with a sense of trepidation I hadn’t really experienced before. The days and weeks and months that stretch out before me are full not only of potential for experiences and discoveries, but of potential for loss. I hope I’m spared too much of the latter in 2014, and I hope all the things and people I treasure are still here by this time next year. I hope I can keep the ability to see that as the enormous stroke of good fortune that it is and spend less time fretting about the small things. I hope blogging will continue to be a source of joy for me and that exhaustion doesn’t defeat me. Lastly, I hope for good books to see me through whatever the future holds.
Happy New Year, everyone! I’ll be away and probably offline for the rest of this week, but I’ll be back sometime during the weekend with the official introduction post for Long-Awaited Reads Month. See you then.

I think when we are younger, we think that we and our loved ones are invincible! But as we age, we see our bodies slowly falling apart, and we begin to lose friends to illness. So frequently it is scary. I know that I've always seen my dad as strong and resilient, but shit happens to him now. It is unnerving. So I'm right there with you...no bad things!!! Also great reading, a peaceful mind, and maybe a few less pounds for me. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat Sandy said! :--) (meta referential joke) Hoping for the best for you for the New Year!!!
ReplyDeleteClueless? The Neverending Story? The Land Before Time? ALL OF THE ABOVE? As if! WhatEVer.

I'm sorry you've been feeling blue. I hope 2014 is a wonderful year for you.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck for a wonderful 2014, Ana.
ReplyDelete"I hope nothing terrible happens" is an EXCELLENT wish. Me too.
ReplyDelete"My wishes for 2014 are less about excitement and adventure and more about being spared bad fortune. I know “I hope nothing terrible happens!” is not a very glamorous New Year’s wish, but if you think about it, it isn’t actually a small thing" ... I can so relate, Ana! I hope the new year brings you increasing hope and joy.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Ana!
ReplyDeleteI also hope nothing terrible happens. And I hope joy for you.
I hope nothing bad happens for you, Ana... Happy New Year!
ReplyDeletehappy 2014! i hope everything will go well for you this new year :))
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, dear Ana! I hope that 2014 brings you more joy than sadness, more happiness than hurt, more laughter than tears. I don't think we can have a year without anything bad, but I sincerely hope the good outweighs it.
ReplyDeleteI suppose its already the New Year, and you are tucked away in bed. I think I guess sometimes the only thing we have in us is to wish for calm, and for no disasters. /i've had that wish for myself too ( I tend to nullify the wish by causing my own disasters). But maybe that is what one has friends for, when we can wish only peace, our friends can wish us joy. So I wish you a very joy-filled year, friend, one that gives you plenty of time to curl up quietly and mend your broken parts, and then lavishes you with beautiful people.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Ana. I think that is a beautiful hope for 2014. I pray it comes true for you.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Ana! I hope 2014 is miles better than 2013 for you. I am right there with you in hoping that nothing terrible happens - and that you get some good fortune, too.
ReplyDeleteYes. HEre's to a nothing bad happens to you 2014 -- I am so happy to say good-bye to last year.
ReplyDeleteMaybe "I hope nothing terrible happens" isn't the most glamorous wish, but you're right that it is in no way small or inconsequential. In fact, at times it seems like it is the biggest, most important wish we could make. Personally, there are so very awesome things I'm looking forward to this year. And yet there are some things that have a very real chance of happening that I just can't bear to face. So yes, yes, yes--I understand your wish. And I want so badly for that wish to come true for you!!! And Ana, I want so much more for you--joy and adventures and health and contentment and the knowledge that you are awesome and special and unique and oh-so-very-loved!!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy new year, Ana!
ReplyDeleteI was watching a show yesterday and they were asking people what they wished for in the New Year. It was kind of interesting to see how some of the answers differed between younger and older. A lot of the younger participants wished for new cars, love, travel while a lot of the older people always mentioned health, stability, etc. So it could be that as we get older we see the bigger picture! :)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, wishing you a year filled with joy!
I definitely hear you about the changing view of the future being one that involves a lot more trepidation than it used to. I've been feeling a bit more like that myself. A year without misfortune sounds like a perfectly good hope for 2014. Hope you have a year that is not only free of bad fortune but is full of good!
ReplyDeleteHappy new year, Ana! Your hopes for 2014 make so much sense, hope it holds true for you! I have lots of planned excitement with moving etc, so I just hope for some quiet tome in-between. Guess we're growing up ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Ana! May your 2014 be full of wonderful things - and books! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Ana! Hope you have a wonderful year filled with lots of wonderful books and beautiful reading moments! And to add to what you said, I would like to send you a Russian wish - Hope you have lots of warm bread, blue skies and no worries :)
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year! I am fully in sympathy about the not-so-rock'n'roll lifestyle! Have a wonderful 2014.
ReplyDeleteI completely understand "I hope nothing terrible happens" as a New Year's wish...I think it can be quite a perfect wish sometimes. And I absolutely loved what Jason said. Beautiful. I second it. I truly do hope that you have a year of personal joys, Ana!
ReplyDeleteA happy belated New Year! I wish you all the best in 2014!
