More on Avatar: The Last Airbender

Team avatar and Momo hugging

When I first posted about Avatar: The Last Airbender back in January, it became clear that there are quite a few big fans of the series among my blog readers. So I thought you might be interested in knowing that Jodie and I have posted our (rather spoilerific, I’m afraid) discussion of seasons two and three over at Lady Business. The verdict, if you’re curious, pretty much amounts to ZOMG ZUKO! THIS SHOW! SO.MUCH.LOVE!11. I’m so incredibly glad I kept watching Avatar even though the first half of season one didn’t quite grab me.

Speaking of TV, some of you will be glad to know I’m planning to join Suey’s watchalong for seasons one and two of Buffy this month. So yes, it looks like Buffy and me is finally going to happen! I know it takes a while for the series to get really good, so I’ll try to keep the lesson about persistence I learned from Avatar firmly in mind.

  1. I really ought to join the Buffy watchalong too--never seen a single episode.

Okay, off to relish in the glory of Avatar...

  2. Realise I may be in the minority but I really liked S1. I'm totally into origin series though, because they tend to be really fun and kooky - the series before the unbearable angst of doom sets in.

  3. Interesting to read your take, Nymeth... Tony and I tried to watch Avatar a while back because of all the raves, but we only watched the first episode, and I wasn't super impressed/hooked, so we didn't keep watching. I know that most tv shows generally need more than one episode to reel you in, but I will keep in mind that you actually felt lukewarm for the first half of season one... I will try again!

Also, there are some really good moments in Buffy S1, but S2 is when things REALLY get good!

  4. Glad you are joining in for Buffy! Suey, I, and some people I don't really know watched the first two episodes last night and chatted on Twitter. I am determined to finish the first season this time!

  5. Debi: Feel free to join us! The more the merrier :)

Jodie: It's good to know that about S1. Hopefully I'll enjoy it too! I've just finished watching a couple of episodes and I like it more than I remembered :)

Steph: I'd say it takes about twelve episodes for Avatar to get really good. It's probably very telling that it took me well over a month to get through that first half of season 1, and then I watched the second half and seasons two and three in the space of about two weeks.

Kelly: Aw, I wish I'd been able to join you! But I've actually just finished watching the first two episodes myself, so it looks like it's really happening for me this time too :P

  6. I also tried to watch Avatar after your review and bc another friend of mine really likes it but I only saw a few episodes. I guess I'll go back and give it another try! I didn't dislike it, I just found other stuff I wanted to watch more. But yeah some series do take awhile, I hope you end up liking Buffy at least a little. I always get kind of nervous when people watch something I like. :)

Are you going to or are you watching Legend of Korra btw?

  7. Amy: The same happened to me with Avatar - I liked the worldbuilding right away but it didn't sink in how complex and character-based and just plain awesome it was going to be until much later. If it hadn't been for the fact that I knew Renay loved it so much, I might have just moved on to other series. Needless to say, I'm incredibly glad I didn't :P Don't be nervous about Buffy! I've just watched the first few episodes again and they clicked with me a lot more than 3 years ago. Giles is so cool! And the series kind of makes me nostalgic for the 90's, if that makes sense. The aesthetics really remind me of the kind of stuff I loved in my early teens :P I'm dying to watch Korra, but there's no legal way to at the moment for any of us. I'm kind of waiting for Jodie and Renay to have access to. But I did watch a stream of the first two episodes, which made me even more excited to see the whole thing.

  8. Buffy making you nostalgic for the 90s makes total sense, it's so steeped in the pop culture of the time. I hope you get to watch Korra soon!! (though aforementioned friend doesn't seem to like it as much)

  9. I started watching Avatar but stopped (apparently too soon). :)

  10. Have you started watching The Legend of Kora?

  11. I downloaded series one a month or two back via iTunes because I thought it would be perfect to watch for OOAT. Shamefully I've only watched the first episode so far.

I've just not had the time and am far too good at procrastinating in the time I do have.
