BBAW - Giveaway the First
Book Blogger Appreciation Week is almost here, and I thought I'd post my first giveaway The prize is a copy of The Ask and the Answer by Patrick Ness, and all you have to do to be entered is answer a few questions. The book is the sequel to The Knife of Never Letting Go, and if you haven't read it yet, well, here's your excuse!

1. What's your favourite book cover so far this year? It doesn't have to be a book published this year, just one you discovered in 2009.
2. Who's your favourite underrated author?
3. What about an underrated book or series? Is there any you wish more people would discover and love?

My favourite book cover is The Island at the End of the World by Sam Taylor - I love all those black and white swirls!
My favourite underrated author is Andrew Miller - he really should have won the Booker prize for Ingenious Pain - it is one of my all time favourites and really makes you think about what life would be like if you could feel no pain.
I last bought my friend's little boy a copy of the Gruffalo's Child because all children should read the Gruffalo!
My favourite unsympathetic character is The Dwarf from Par Lagerkvist's book of the same name. He is so evil, but it is such a good book!

Alright...so here's the thing :p I said I wasn't going to enter any giveaways, but I started thinking, if we're doing a group read of The Ask and the Answer, well I have to get it right? ReplyDelete1. Favorite cover of the year is Margo Lanagan's Tender Morsels. There's just something about that cover that is so perfect and I haven't even read the book yet. I'm in love with it! It just screams folk tale.
2. My favorite underated author is...hmm, this is a tough one! I think I'd go with either Anne Rice (because she gets a lot of flack, but I think she's amazing) or Simon Van Booy, because he's just an amazing author, but hardly anyone knows who he is. His first book, The Secret Lives of People in Love is just gorgeous!
3. The Mayfair Witches by Anne Rice or any of John Bellair's series!! Love those!!
4. The last book I bought as a gift was a New Orleans cookbook for Debi :)
5. Sorry, I'm on an Anne Rice kick right now...she's stuck in my head, but a favorite unsympathetic character would be Lestat...though I think that Rice does show some sympathy for him occasionally, he's kind of a cool bad guy. But I think he's an amazing character when it comes down to it. Oh and Edward from Twilight..god he's so freaking cool!!! *barfs*
Oh, can I add another underated book or author?? Pleeeeease??? Keith Miller!!! His book, The Book of Flying is so freaking incredible and I think everyone should read it now!!! Ok...that's all :/

Rampant by Diana Peterfreund. It’s gorgeous.
I love Eshter Freud but I don’t see her mentioned very often.
The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford. It’s such a fabulous book and no one seems to have read it.
I gave my God child Blueberry Girl by Neil Gaiman.
Mrs Coulter in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials. She’s so ruthless and single-minded but SO fabulous too.
1. Hmm, hard to say. Maybe Shadowbridge by Gregory Frost. Or The Rose Labyrinth by Titania Hardie.
ReplyDelete2. There are a lot! Sandy Hingston is probably one of my favorite writers, and I know she's underappreciated because she was dropped by her publisher mid-series. Tanith Lee for sure--I don't know why she isn't as famous as Ursula K Le Guin or Charles de Lint, because she deserves to be. And a really great writer named Jan Zimlich hasn't published a book since 2002. :(
3. The Tigress series by Jade Lee is wonderful, even though it sounds seriously old skool and weird. The Oracles of Delphi was a pretty good book; I'm surprised more people haven't reviewed it.
4. A book about Frank Lloyd Wright for my mom.
5. You mean an unlikable character I like for some reason? Does this have to be in a book? I'm going to say Jack Vincennes from LA Confidential.

2. This one has me tearing my hair out...I just can't think of an answer. I was tempted to say John Bellairs since the boys and I are having such fun reading his books and I'd never even heard of him until you and Chris brought him to my attention, but I see Chris already mentioned him...
3. Okay, it's probably not fair to use this one since I haven't even finished reading it, but I'm going to anyway since I can't think of a better answer. Oh Pure and Radiant Heart. It's taking me forever to finish it, but I am absolutely loving it. It is bizarre, in just the perfect way. And I've never heard of anyone else reading it.

2. My favorite underrated author - difficult to say. I am going to say Martine Leavitt; she writes lovely, frightening YA-type books that are just fantastic.

4. I don't remember! I believe it was a Buffy comic for my friend's birthday.
5. Roy Cohn from Tony Kushner's amazing play Angels in America. I don't like him in the sense of liking him (as another character says, "He's, like, the polestar of human evil!"), but he's fascinating anyway. And Al Pacino plays him perfectly in the HBO adaptation.

2. Underrated authors?? That is such a hard one. Hmm....Greg Iles? Richard North Patterson? I think all my favorite authors are pretty highly rated!!
3. The Secret History by Donna Tartt is such a fantastic book!! Everyone should read it!
4. I bought my son The Hunger Games for his birthday.
5. Ack. Debi took my answer. Randall Flagg. I mean, it's hard to have sympathy for the Devil (unless you are the Rolling Stones, of course!) But I do just love his evilness!! Besides, now he's following my on Twitter. Kind of freaked me out at first, but now I'm appreciating his humor! (sorry...there are a bunch of writers recreating The Stand on Twitter. Kind of fun in a really warped sort of way!)

I nominated 'Because I am Furniture' by Thalia Chaltas for best book published in 2009 and I think that so far that's recieved a pretty low level of press, despite being really exciting (girls building self esteem and strength through team sports, the nature of domestic violence and all written in verse).
4. What was the last book you bought as a gift?
Last Christmas I bought a big box of chick-lit books for a friend and included in that was 'Clicking Her Heels' by Lucy Hepburn (a girls quest to retreive her shoe collection after her boyfriend maliciously sells them on Ebay).
5. Do you have a favourite unsympathetic character? If so, who are they, and why do you like them?
It has to be Emma Bovary. Apparently we're all suppoused to hate her because she has aspirations above herself and cheats on her solid, loving, unaspiring husband (ok so that last reason has some merit but that man is dull and I know that doesn't make real adultery ok but sometimes it makes literary adultery better). But when her misunderstanding husband puts her in that coffin, smothered by layers of fine cloth and buries her he emphasises that Emma is a woman who rails against the ways in which her life has trapped her.

Most underrated book or series. I think I would go with the Spooks series which I don't think gets the attention it should.
Last book I bought as a gift. I don't buy books for gifts, I normally buy book vouchers so they can pick themselves. Though I did pick up a second hand copy of Imogen by Jilly Cooper yesterday for my friend who is collecting the originals.
Favourit unsympathetic character - that is a tough one. LOrd Voldemort from Harry Potter.

ReplyDeleteFirst off I like the first question so much i am going to do a post on "covers"~.. that being said I am guess one of my favorite covers is from the book Bird by Rita murphy.. i swear I bought that book for the cover!
2 I don't know that I have an underrated author but I think those that wrote more "classics" (Dickens and Wilke jump up at me since I am reading Drood).. they are harder to read and so many people don't read them .
3 again i don't know off hand of an underrated book I've read but I'd like to see some old books be "reborn" again, like Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern books.
4 the Graveyard book for my grandson
5 I have 2 characters for this.. Raistlin from the Dragonlance series who is a wizard you love to hate but always old out hope you are wrong and he will turn out good. and I loved Bartimaeus from Jonathan Strods trilogy.. he was nasty, nasty but I loved his sense of humor.

3. Wives and Daughers by Elizabeth Gaskell. (I'm sure there's something else that I wish I could think of right now!)
4. I bought Drood and gave it too my husband and said "happy birthday" even though his birthday isn't for a month.
5. Heathcliff! I think there is more to him than we see and that had circumstances been better, we would see a whole different dude.

ReplyDelete1. Definitely THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY. I love how the whole thing's set up just like a stack of comic books, complete with a carefully decorated spine and a back cover that mimics an old-time comic ad.
2. Sarah Monette, although I've also heard people say that Guy Gavriel Kay is underrated. I don't really get that, since I know dozens of people who love him, but I guess they're just a small ripple in a big pond.
3. No contest: Sarah Monette's DOCTRINE OF LABYRINTHS. I love those books just a hairsbreadth less than I love TIGANA, and you know how much I love TIGANA.
4. FLORA SEGUNDA by Ysabeau S. Wilce. Which, come to think of it, is the start of another underrated series by another underrated author...
5. Probably Holden Caulfield. I love his voice, and I find that his attitude makes a lot of sense when you consider what he's going through.

I love The Good Earth cover on the edition I have. It's a beautiful, vibrant yellow, and the artwork is gorgeous.
2. Who's your favourite underrated author?
Hmmmm, probably Thane Rosenbaum. He writes about the Holocaust from the perspective of the children of survivors. Very moving and original.
3. What about an underrated book or series? Is there any you wish more people would discover and love?
In the same vein, I would recommend Rosenbaum's The Golems of Gotham.
4. What was the last book you bought as a gift?
Hmmm, I bought Chuck a book of famous quotes that includes the stories behind the sayings.
5. Do you have a favourite unsympathetic character? If so, who are they, and why do you like them?
Titus from MT Anderson's Feed is pretty unsympathetic, and I still love him and the book as a whole.

2. Ummm. Is Juliet Marillier underrated, or does everyone appreciate what a talented author she is? Otherwise, I don't know if everyone realises how intelligent and witty Georgette Heyer is. :)
3. I wish everyone would read and share my love of the Sevenwaters or Light Isles series, by Juliet Marillier!
4. THE DEMON'S LEXICON, by Sarah Rees Brennan.
5. I know these are very Marillier-orientated answers. But probably either Tadeusz or Cezar from Juliet Marillier's WILDWOOD DANCING. Both characters have essentially cruel or evil natures but they can also be kind or loving or hurt. I guess if a "bad" character can be kind, and/or has been badly hurt (in the past or the present), you do feel a lot more sympathy and sadness for them.

ReplyDeleteRight now, at this moment, the first one that comes to MIND, is WILLOW by Julia Hoban. The book is about a girl who cuts herself to cope with the pain of loosing her parents and the cover, a picture of a girl literally cut into pieces is a power reflection.
2. Who's your favourite underrated author?

Right now I would say Kristin Cashore. Probably not that underrated, but she's a relatively new YA/fantasy writer and she's amazing. I think everyone should read her books.
3. What about an underrated book or series? Is there any you wish more people would discover and love?
THE PRINCESS BRIDE by William Goldman. I love that book and it seems I only know a handful of people who have read it.
4. What was the last book you bought as a gift?
The Annotated Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum, Annotated by Rod Scher for my uncle.
5. Do you have a favourite unsympathetic character? If so, who are they, and why do you like them?
Prince Humperdink in the Princess Bride. He cracks me up. And I can't stand him. :)

Favorite underrated author is Melanie Rae Thon. I love the way she uses language.
Favorite underrated book has to be The Bearskinner by Laura Amy Schlitz. It's based on a Grimm's fairy tale and creeps me out!
Last book I bought as a gift was probably Little Red Riding Hood by Trina Schart Hyman. I bought it as an early birthday present for myself! ;)
My favorite unsympathetic character is probably the wolf of the Little Red Riding Hood stories. Especially when you read him as Bigby Wolf in Bill Willingham's Fable series.

ReplyDelete1. Lord of Snow and Ashes - Sarah Ash. I so love the owl. I haven't read the book yet ,and I'm really hoping the bird appears in it somewhere! I kept picking this book up, all because of the cover...
2.Phil Rickman. I wish more people would read him - he writes about the supernatural so well, and Merrily Watkins and her daughter and all the surrounding characters are good. Some of the best mystery/horror writing, and hardly anyone reads him!!
3. See above, he's written 8 books so far, and only one or two other bloggers have mentioned him.
4. Swan Peake by James Lee Burke, for my mother for her birthday.
5. Hannibel Lector. I know! But he's so intelligent he's frightening, so creepy that I get scared just thinking anyone like him could be out there, and I can't forget him saying to the FBI guy (in Red Dragon, not Silence of the Lamb) that the hero had to be a lot like Hannibel, in order to get into his head so easily. Scary, and fascinating, and awful. So I don't like him, but i can't look away either!

Not sure this one qualifies as underated but it is not well known, The Vorsigian space opera by Lois McMaster Bujold. I am loving it.

Laura Gallego, I think she is pretty famous in Spain, but not internationally, her books are translated into many europeon languages but english. And she has such amazing books!

Well Laura Gallego has 2 incredible series (The tower Chronicles and Idhun's memories)

Not sure.. I think it was breaking Dawn to a friend.

I think I always like the bad and unfriendly people (in books!) My favourite is Draco Malfoy, and I love him just for being a badass. I like inteligent genious with not so good intentions thank to Eoin Colfer too.

1. The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova. It is so haunting and mysterious!
2. Actually, I can't think of any author that I would really call underrated. But I have added quite a few to my list after reading all of the other comments.
3. Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury. It seems that this book gets overlooked by everyone. It's amazing to me how many people have never even heard of it!
4. I bought A Wrinkle in Time as a birthday gift for my 11 year old sister.
5. I think my favorite unsympathetic character would have to be Heathcliff. I know, everybody hates him, but he's just so complex and interesting! A despicable human being, but a fascinating character.

ReplyDelete1. My favorite cover is a book that isn't out yet (almost, October) and it's called "Howards End Is On the Landing" by Susan Hill. It's beautiful.
2. I love Kent Haruf and a lot of people haven't even heard of him.
3. I loved The Dogs of Babel, it's one of the rare books that I actually keep a copy to re-read. I cry every time.
4. I bought my mother Duma Key by Steven King.
5. I have to also say Severius Snape. I think because I often find myself liking the unsympathetic character but I was always changing my mind with Snape.

A.M. Homes, her stories and novels have such realistic characters in everyday situations, but she makes it so fascinating.
3. What about an underrated book or series? Is there any you wish more people would discover and love?
I say it everytime, but I honestly think that everyone in the world should read Katherine Dunn's Geek Love at least once.
4. What was the last book you bought as a gift?
Hmm, I got my mom a couple Amanda Quick books she wanted for a series.

OMG yes! Iago from Shakespeares' Othello! He is such a sneaky, despicable guy, but I can't help but feel for him. I think it's because he is so sure that his plots will succeed, that seeing him fail is heartbreaking.
