Book Lovers Recommendations and Blogging Break
The lovely Ramya at Ramya's Bookshelf has a weekly feature in which she asks other bloggers to recommend five of their favourite books. I was thrilled when she asked me to participate, and my choices are up today. I tried to pick five books I haven't gushed about incessantly here before, but still, my choices will probably not be too surprising for those who have been reading this blog for a while. What can I do, I can't help what I like!
Another thing: I'm going to need to take a break from blogging for some time. I've been having trouble juggling everything lately - school, work, settling down after a move, reading, blogging, life - and well, something's got to give. I love telling you all about the books I read, I really do. But I'm getting a bit burned out, so I think some time away will do me good.
On top of everything, my laptop finally died for good yesterday. It had been threatening to for a while, which at least gave me the chance to back up most of what I had there. And I'm very, very glad it didn't happen during the read-a-thon. I have an old desktop I can use, so at least I won't be completely computerless and internetless, but it's not the same as having my own computer. And that's an added reason to take a break, rather than trying to keep up and forfeiting my sanity in the process.
I won't be completely offline, so you might see me on Twitter or blog hopping occasionally. I'll probably have less time to comment, though, for which I apologize in advance. I promise I haven't forgotten about anyone, and I'll miss you all!
I'll probably be back sometime in early May. Until then, happy reading!
PS: This cannot be stressed too often: Nick Hornby rocks. Ah, the good ol' idea that entertainment is childish, lowly and despicable. I'm so glad people like Nick Hornby and Michael Chabon exist.

I'll miss you, Nymeth, but I'm glad that you're taking a break. I hope you get all the peace and relaxation that you need.
ReplyDeleteYes, Nick Hornby does rocks!
We all need breaks sometimes. Have a good one. It's better to break before you burn out; we wouldn't want to lose you permanantly. :)
ReplyDeletei'm going to miss you nymeth! but i agree, a break is a good thing! I do it often!:)
ReplyDeleteI'll miss you, Nymeth, but your life is more important! I hope your break refreshes you and gets you excited about your return rather than stressed.
ReplyDeleteTake care of yourself! And we'll be here when you feel that tug to come back!
ReplyDeleteLezlie
Blogging breaks are absolutely essential! Take care, I'll miss you, and I look forward to your return!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your time off, Nymeth. We'll be wating for your return.
ReplyDeleteI agree - blogging breaks are necessary of you will suffer burnout. Have a fabulous rest and we will see you when you get back.
ReplyDeleteI'll miss you too Nymeth, but everyone needs to get away once in a while. Good luck doing whatever needs to be done in the next few weeks and see you in May!
ReplyDeleteawesome choices nymeth! very cool.
ReplyDeleteand a very nice variety.
i totally sympathise with your laptop woes - as you well know we've been experiencing the same problems!
We'll miss you but hopefully the break will do you good and you'll have lots of wonderful books to tell us about later! (PS: am reading a particularly charming book right now which you might enjoy on your break: The Enchanted April, have you read? I think you would like...)
ReplyDeleteTake care and rest up!
Breaks are very good things! I hope you have a good one, even though I'll miss you. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am sad that I have only lately discovered your blog and you won't be blogging ... sniff.
ReplyDeleteYou need to do what you need to do though; I recently took a much-needed break from an online community and it has been good for the soul.
I have read 3/5 of your recommendations (Pratchett, Eugenides and Kerouac) and definitely agree; A Confederacy of Dunces is on the bookshelf and will be read.
I promptly followed up your recommendation of Girl Meets Boy by reading it and quoted your influence in my post on it.
You will be missed while you are away, but sometimes a break is a good thing! Enjoy and we'll see you when you are back :o)
ReplyDeleteYou shall be missed. I saw your pics on Ramya's site and the only one I've read was The Virgin Suicides - and I agree it is a great one.
ReplyDeleteThe good thing about your couple of weeks off is that my TBR will get a break - considering you've done major damage to it since I started following your blog.
Enjoy and hope to hear from you soon.
♥ Nely
Enjoy your break. Thanks for letting us know ahead of time, so we wouldn't worry!
ReplyDeleteBreaks are good, so enjoy yourself and your loved ones and you'll be missed but am happy that you're taking time out for yourself. :D
ReplyDeleteI'll miss you during you blog break, but if anyone deserves a break it's you. You're an amazing blogger and I always know your posts will make me smile :)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy yourself and hope to see you soon *hugs*
I'll miss you terribly Nymeth, but enjoy your break. I completely understand needing one...I think I'm going back into my "post once a week" phase....We'll be here when you get back of course!
ReplyDeleteWell, you'll be missed but early May is not really all that long for us to wait!.
ReplyDeleteHave fun, relax as much as possible, the start racking up those bad bloggers points when you return! :P
I'll miss reading about your books, but I completely understand. If anyone deserves a break -- it's you, especially after the read-a-thon. Get caught up on everything else, rest up and we'll see you back here soon. :)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break, I know you deserve it! Along with everyone else I will miss you while you're gone but look forward to your return!! Have fun!! :-D
ReplyDeleteHave a good vacation! :D
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break! You will definitely be missed until you are back!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break. We all need a break now and then. We will miss you though!
ReplyDeleteAww...I'll miss you, Nymeth! But I do understand about having a break and everything. You deserve it and I hope to see you soon in May!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break! :)
I've been wondering why I haven't seen a post from you in a few days--very un-Nymeth like. I'll miss you to pieces, but I understand your wanting to take a break. I've actually been contemplating the same thing lately. I'm burned out for a number of reasons and feel like I need to reevaluate why I'm here in the first place. I've been very frustrated with the blogosphere in general, which is a good indication that I need to take a step back. We'll see how the next few days go. It won't be the same without you though. :( Have a good break. Hmmm--not sure if you'll be responding to comments or not? Guess I probably won't subscribe to comments this time? Gahhhh! :P
ReplyDeleteBy the way, loved looking at your recommendations. I can honestly say that YOU have influenced my reading more than any other blogger over the past year and a half. And really, that is a fantastic thing.
Aw, I'll miss your posts, but I hope you recharge and re-energise! :)
ReplyDeleteYou will be missed over the next few weeks. As a new blogger you've really made me feel at home.
ReplyDelete(btw - I heart Confederacy of Dunces. It made me want to buy a hotdog stand, at least for a weekend).
(and another btw - I"m currently reading a Hornby book now! A Long Way Down)
see ya in May.
cheers!
Have a wonderful break from blogging; I'm sure it will do you good. Take the time you're not blogging to read a lot -- that's the whole point anyway!
ReplyDeleteKim
Enjoy your time away, Nymeth!
ReplyDeleteI need a new computer, too, yikes!
ReplyDeleteI will miss you much!!!!! But go crazy, have fun, and enjoy your break!!!
Will add my voice to all those who will miss you. Better to take a break than keep doing it past the point of enjoyment, though! You put a lot of time and thought into your reviews and your comments and that can be so very time-consuming and tiring, too. Good luck with everything, and I'll be looking forward to reading when you're ready to come back!
ReplyDeleteI think that it is good to take a break once in awhile. I can't wait till you come back renewed and ready to add to our TBR lists :) We will miss you and talk to you soon :)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break and come back refreshed!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Hornby link.
I hope you find it in you to return to blogging eventually.. you are certainly one who enjoys reading and talking about the books. I may not comment often but I never miss a day stopping by to read your blog.. I do know it can take over your life sometimes... maybe if you retrain your commitment and don't feel you need to post "every single day" it would help..
ReplyDeletethank you for all the good reading I've had! Hope to see you back soon.
I certainly understand, but I'll miss you all the same!!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break.
Will miss you, miss you, miss you!!! But of course, you probably suspect I won't leave you alone anyway. ;) I hope your break gives you a little time for relaxing...though it sounds like even with a blogging break you've got your hands full! Love you sweetie!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break.
ReplyDeleteI'll miss you Nymeth but I totally understand needing a break. I sent you an email the other day-just before the read-a-thon. I'm wondering now if you got it with your computer acting up.
ReplyDeleteTake care!
We'll miss you Nymeth. Hope you come back refreshed after your break.
ReplyDeleteBreaks are good! Hope you pull things together without too much trouble. I'll miss you, though! I'm reading Tender Morsels now, and I'm cautiously enjoying it. If anything else happens to that poor woman, I don't think I'll be able to handle it! :-p
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break. I certainly understand where you're coming from.
ReplyDeleteI hope your break is wonderful and that you will be refreshed!! I will miss your posts but everyone needs to take breaks that is for sure. Take care and I'll be thinking of you :)
ReplyDeleteHave a good blogging break, I hope it helps you get a handle on the rest of your obligations and look forward to having you back, hopefully soon!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that you are stretched so thin. I hope you enjoy your rest, and I will keep checking back for your eventual return.
ReplyDeleteHiya I just wanted to say I recieved the bookmarks - thansk so much for picking me as the winner of the mini-challenge. They are so cute (especially like the kids fabric one).
ReplyDeleteI totally understand this. I feel kind of overwhelmed myself sometimes and I don't blog nearly as often (or as well) as you do. I hope you have wonderful break and that you get a lot of reading good reading done. See you when you get back!
ReplyDeleteOh no! I'll miss you but take care and I'll look forward to your return :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm just coming to give you a virtual hug, Ana...just gave Debi one too :) Hope things are going ok with you and that you're enjoying your break!
ReplyDeleteI hope you sort your laptop out or are able to get a new one. Have a good break and come back soon! I bought the new Michael Chabon that you reviewed a little while ago for Alex and he is really looking forward to reading it. I hope he does it soon so I can steal it!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy a break! I don't blame you one bit. You put a lot of time and effort into blogging. When it starts to feel more like a job that a hobby, it's time for a break.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear about your laptop, Ana! Take a good break and we want you back fresh and bubbly! :D
ReplyDeleteBTW, when you come back from your break, I have a little something for you on my blog. You can pick it up here.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to read On the Road for quite some time, as well as something by Terry Prachett. I understand about needing to re-balance all the different things going on in your life! It's definitely good to take step away from something that isn't as fun as it should be!
ReplyDeleteI'll be thinking of you and wishing you rest, relaxation, lots of laughter, sunshine, flowers, butterflies, puppies&kitties and hugs! and lots of reading time with no eye strain. unplug and be back soon, Care
ReplyDeleteI'm going to miss your wonderful reviews! But, I think after the read-a-thon you definitely need a break :)
ReplyDeleteHope you are reading some wonderful books and catching up on, well, life! See you back in May.
hi miss nymeth. enjoy your time off, take it easy.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading a Nick Hornby book soon, just because you've recommend him so highly :)
http://thebookworm07.blogspot.com/
Thank you so much for the good wishes, everyone! I ended up being completely absent from the online world this past week because of some problems with my ISP. But things are working again now, hopefully for good this time, so next week I'll be back to commenting and the following one I'll be blogging again. I miss you all, and I can't wait to tell you about how INSANELY GOOD The Fox Woman is.
ReplyDeleteTake as long off as you need until it's fun again! Hope you read lots of good stuff during your time away♥ We'll miss you though! :)
ReplyDeleteHave a nice break- it can be so refreshing (until you come back from vacation and find that five days away has backed up your google reader + 400! Augh- but it's a good thing) See you back soon
ReplyDeleteThe only one of the 5 that I've read is The Virgin Suicides. I thought the book and the movie were both great!
ReplyDeleteHope you're enjoying your break. Sometimes it's good to take some time away. Looking forward to having you back though. :)
You definitely know how much you will be missed, but to further prove appreciation of what you do, here are a couple of blog awards:
