Banned Book Week and 6 Weird Things Memes
Serena, Naida and Annie tagged me for the 6 Weird/Random Things About Me Meme. Here it goes:
And still in honour of Banned Book Week 2008, I will do this meme that Kate tagged me for. The goal is to go through the ALA’s list of the 100 most frequently challenged books from 1990-2000 and mark the ones you've read.
- I often chew on the ends of my pens and pencils, but since I read this post by J.S. Peyton I've been forcing myself to quit. The story about the student really freaked me out. (I do wash my hands, though.)
- Like Becky, I am not at all a fan of talking to people on the phone. It makes me anxious enough that I'm often tempted not to pick up my cell phone when it rings. But I know that having to call that number back would make me even more anxious, so most of the time I do pick it up.
- For some reason I never wear my hair loose.
- I never sing in front of other people, but I made up little theme songs for each of my cats and dogs and I sing them to them regularly.
- I hate squid with a passion and I have a hard time understanding how people can eat it. The smell is enough to make me want to throw up.
- You know those blog widgets that show the most recent visitors by location? They make me really uncomfortable. It's not that I don't want people to know I've visited their blogs, but the thought of someone being able to see I'm at their blog at that particular moment weirds me out.

I'm with you 100% on the phone comment Nymeth. I could easily live without a phone and never miss it.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally with you on #6. And as far as #2, I get anxiety about even thinking about picking the phone to make a doctor's appointment. Well, I used to. Then in April, I started making a slow but steady effort to get myself more adjusted to the phone, and it's really helped a lot. It's such a weird thing to try to explain to other people, too.
ReplyDeleteYikes about the pen thing! I just popped over the J.S.'s post and am pretty freaked out. I don't really care to talk on the phone either and don't do it unless I have to. I get really anxious about having to spend time alone with someone in person, though. For example a car ride--even if the person is my best friend I will get anxious about taking a road trip with them for fear that we will sit in silence the whole time. I'm not very good at conversation--I do better with people who talk a lot but then I get annoyed because they talk the whole time :P This is my favorite meme floating around.
ReplyDeleteThanks for participating Nymeth! I hate talking on the phone as well, and I will pick up my cell if it rings because I would rather not have to call the person back.
ReplyDeleteI hate the smell, look, and taste of squid as well. I used to chew on pens, but not pencils...somehow I have miraculously stopped doing that without knowing it consciously.
I've tried to give my work cell phone away a few times, but no one wants it.
ReplyDeleteI'm really shy about singing in front of others too. You'd think I wouldn't be since I sang in several different choices for years. But that at least I can manage.
Wow! You have almost all of the books listed here. And you've read many too. :D
ReplyDeleteI have read a few of those books. In fact, when I was in middle school, I checked out The Drowning of Stephen Jones but the next day, the librarian asked for it back saying it was going to be reviewed by the school board. I think the book was actually removed from the library because I never saw it there again.
ReplyDeleteI've been working on my phone fear, lately. A long, long time ago I had a job at which I had to take phone calls from vendors and then check files to answer their questions. I was told to put the phone down while I checked the files, so that the phone charges would go to the caller and we wouldn't have to call back. Funny to look back on. That job really helped me develop confidence on the phone. And, then I stayed home with the kids, for 20 years. Har. So much for that.
ReplyDeleteI hate those widgets, too. They freak me out.
I used to chew on my pens and pencils too until a pen exploded in my mouth! That just about ended that habit...embarrasing and it doesn't taste so good :p I'm not a phone person either...quick conversations are fine like "meet me at 6:00" but aside from that, I really just despise the phone, lol.
ReplyDeleteI've read almost all of the same banned books as you! That's funny. I really can't even fathom why some of these books are banned....it's just sad. Well, really I can't understand why any books are banned...
How on earth have you not read The Witches by Roald Dahl?!? Shame o you. If you don't read it this year and we do our challenge again next year consider it top of your list :p
ReplyDelete"I never sing in front of other people, but I made up little theme songs for each of my cats and dogs and I sing them to them regularly." Hehehe I love it :)
Why or why did I click that link? I knew how bad germs freak me out to begin with. I think I had read 14 on that list.
ReplyDeleteI hear you on the phone thing! We finally got caller ID, and it's been the best thing ever...now I can pick up the phone when I know it's Rich calling but not stress out about answering if it's someone else. I know it's warped, but I can't even bring myself to call and order pizza.
ReplyDeleteAnd I totally love that you have theme songs for your babies!!!
I might have to "borrow" that banned books list meme-ish thing...I think that's the first one of those book lists that I've actually read more than 10% of. :)
I now have a 7th quirky fact, I am terrified of galloping gangrene! (I shouldn't have clicked the link)
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome that you gave your fur-babies theme songs! I have silly voices I use to talk to my dogs, and they growl and whine back making it sound like they are talking :)
Dar, I'm glad I'm not alone!
ReplyDeleteEva: I really should make an effort too. The thought of picking up the phone to do anything "official" makes me really anxious, so I put it off indeterminately, and of course that the thought is there at the back of my mind nagging me. Once I actually do it it's not that hard and the anxiety goes away, so I really need to train myself to stop procrastinating. And yes, a lot of the time people just don't understand why it's such a big deal. But I just can't help it.
Trish: I don't talk much either, and if I'm alone with someone for too long the inevitable result is awkward silence. I think that in some ways it's easier to be around people who talk a lot, because they don't expect you to talk back :P I just smile and nod every few minutes and get lost in my own thoughts :P
Serena: yay, another squid hater! The look of it is bad too...the tentacles are just creepy.
Literary Feline: lol :P I wish somebody would take my cell phone!
Alice: I hope to read even more!
Aria: That is too bad :/
bookfool: It's really good to know I'm not alone in my widget and phone phobia! That job sounds nightmarish, but I bet you do get used to it after a while. I need to work on it, but I don't want to :P
Chris: A mouth full of ink definitely doesn't sound good :P And book banning in general baffles me, but some in particular, like Where's Waldo, are just plain bizarre, lol
Rhinoa: Somehow I never got around to reading that one! But Debi reviewed it recently and she got me thinking that I really, really should!
Ladytink: Sorry about that :P
Debi: It's not warped. Or maybe it is, but it seems that lots of us have the same problem :P I don't like ordering pizza either. I don't like doing anything on the phone. The theme songs are all ridiculous and nobody would find them funny but me, but oh well :P And I hope you do the meme, I'd love to see which ones you've read!
Book Zombie: Sorry about giving you a new phobia :P Sometimes I use silly voices too, and the cats look at me like I'm a freak, lol
I'm completely with you on number 6, Nymeth. I'm so weirded out by it that I have actually stopped visiting several blogs as often as I might because they have those on them. I feel like I'm being spied on and am obliged to leave a comment because I know they'll know I've been there. And it's all too much for me to cope with... so I don't.
ReplyDeleteOh totally with you on the phone thing. What's weird to me is how much I used to love talking on the phone. I'd spend hours and hours with friends but now, I just don't want to be on the phone at all.
ReplyDeleteThe blog widgets... Yea, I'm not a big fan of those either...
Cath: I knooow. I just can't help feeling that way too. Websites that show your online status and don't give you the option to set it as private bother me in general. My first instinct is to run. And the inevitable result is that I spend less time there than I would otherwise.
ReplyDeleteIliana: I'd talk on the phone for hours when I was in my teens, it seems unbelievable to me now, lol. But even then, I was only comfortable talking on the phone with a very small number of close friends.
glad you played along :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with #6, that freaks me out too! especially when the widget says the location you are in....like the town you live in. yikes.

Naida: I know! That always makes me feel so uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteI don't like talking on the phone much either. Luckily, I suppose, nowadays most people either text or email. I never answer our home phone, it's almost always someone trying to sell us something.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of squid either, although octopus looks so much worse to me. They're both popular here! My husband keeps telling me it's delicious but I'm not convinced.
BTW, I haven't forgotten that you tagged me for a similar meme a couple months ago! Sorry. One of these days...
I'm so not a phone person. I hate answering the phone unless its family or a couple close friends. Thank goodness I have hubby to make all the business calls. I'd never survive without him. LOL
ReplyDeleteAs for hair, I always wear it in a bun, ponytail, or claw clip. I'd cut it really short except I think my face is too chunky. If I leave it down, it frizzes right up.
I'm done babbling now. LOL
