I'm back

Hello everyone! I'm back from my week by the sea. I see that blogger's autopost function worked just fine. Thank you everyone for leaving comments while I was away. I've just checked my Google Reader and - surprise, surprise - I have over 300 unread items. I'll try to catch up a bit, but I know that at some point I'll end up giving up and marking everything as read. So I apologize in advance for that.

And how was my trip, you ask? Well, it rained for the first two days and a half, so we had to stay indoors. But it wasn't so bad. We watched the Olympics and petted the hotel's very lovely resident cat, and I read The Road and The Giver. Both are books that certainly put the unpleasantness of a rainy holiday into perspective. I loved them both. Hopefully I'll be able to post my thoughts on them at some point next week.

Anyway, from Tuesday on the weather was lovely, and I had a wonderful time. I had no luck spotting dolphins or whales, but I did see sea turtles. And also penguins! I was surprised to see them so far up north, but apparently it's not uncommon for them to show up here at this time of the year. They come all the way from Patagonia. How cool is that?

Time for some pictures. Not only of the past week, but of this whole past month and a half. I can't believe I'm leaving in ten days already. Where did the summer go?

(You can click on the pictures to enlarge them.)

Monkeys are awesome.

I love how pensive he/she looks.

A coati.

A hummingbird.

Arraial do Cabo

Definitely the prettiest beach I've ever been to.

A penguin! I have no photos of the turtles, unfortunately. They were too fast! They'd poke their little heads out of the water for a second and be gone again before I even had time to reach for the camera.

Lots of little fish by the side of the boat.

Búzios.

  4. It looks like you had a wonderful time! I've heard from my sister that Brazil is absolutely stunning and your pictures certainly show that. I would have made best friends with the resident cat as well. :)

I really look forward to your thoughts on The Road. After I finish with In Cold Blood I'll probably start that one (and then hopefully something really light and fun after all the darkness!!). Glad you're back Nymeth!

  7. Welcome back. I like it that you managed to catch quite a few wildlife pictures. But I was looking at the monkey photo for a moment and wondering, "What's that?"

The water just looks beautiful. Sorry it rained for a bout 2 days. but did you get to do much swimming?

I'm still a little skeptical about the monkey.

  15. Absolutely gorgeous!! I'm so jealous! I could really use a vacation by the sea, but alas, this year there will be none!! Too much work and not enough money this year!

The Giver was a wonderful book. Can't wait to read your review!

  16. Penguins?! Those pictures are stunning! It amazes me that places like that actually exist in the world. They're the kind of places that you think only exist in pictures until you actually get to see them. Glad you had such a great time Nymeth :)

  17. Beautiful pictures, I love all the sunset one and the one of the wave crashing on the rocks. Glad you had a great time and the weather improved. It's always good to have a cat to play with on holiday :)

  18. CJ: Thanks :) I'm still thinking of what to say about The Road. It's a hard one to write about. I remember that it was your review that made me decide that this was a book I had to read, and I really can't thank you enough.

Cath, thanks, I'm glad you like them :)

Debi: Sigh, so do I. I'm glad you liked the pictures!

Trish: Has your sister been to Foz do Iguaçu? I imagine so, since it's right on the border. I haven't been there myself, but I've seen pictures taken by a friend and it is stunning. There's so much to see in Brazil...I'd love to make it to the Amazon, but it's just too far away. Ah well, maybe someday. You will definitely need something light and fun after The Road. I read The Road and the Giver one after the other, but fortunately there was David Sedaris to cheer me up afterwards.

Orchidus: Thanks :) I really did.

Kim: I hadn't either and I really wasn't expecting to! The little critter made my day :)

Dark Orpheus: The pictures are bad because they were under a dark canopy of trees and I didn't want to scare them with the flash. But they're capuchin monkeys. They're small, they make bird-like chirping noises and they love guavas :P I did get to swim after the weather turned :)

Deslily, Carl, Literary Feline, Lightheaded and Maree, thanks :) I'm glad you all liked the pictures.

Valentina: How cool that you got to see dolphins! I hope the pictures did come out well.

Melody and Stephanie, I hope you both get to take a well-deserved vacation in the near future. And yes, The Giver was wonderful! I can't believe it took me so long to pick it up.

Chris: I know! The colour of the sea in particular is like something you normally see in travel magazines, normally with the word "paradise" in the vicinity. But places like this do exist!

Rhinoa: Thanks! And it is, although it made me miss my kitties even more.

  19. Nymeth--I'm not entirely sure but that does sound familiar. Is that where the huge waterfalls are? If so, yes. I know for sure she went to Rio but I'm not sure where else.

  21. Like everyone has already said, the pictures are incredible...I especially like the church in the valley (it reminds me of the Texas hill country).

  23. Trish: It's where the big falls are, yes! And Rio is just lovely, even if a bit scary.

    Serena, thank you :)

Ken: That was at a natural park where we went for a weekend...such a beautiful place. I think I'll post about The Road later this week.

    Robin: Thanks!
