Janiça

??? - 30/06/2008

My dog passed away today, in a situation very similar to that of Teddy Rose's Robbie. She was taken to the vet this past weekend because we noticed that she didn't seem to have any energy at all, and plus on Saturday she refused her food. She turned out to be highly anemic, and the vet suspected Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. We had to wait until today for the test results, though, and in the meantime she was prescribed some drugs for her anemia. Today the results revealed that it wasn't leukemia, but Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia. The problem was that she hadn't responded to the drugs at all, and her level of red blood cells was even lower than before. The only way to buy her some time so that the drugs could work was to have a blood transfusion. We took Maria, our other dog, to the vet to be a blood donor. But Janiça was weak (her advanced age probably didn't help), and in the process her heart simply stopped :(

She was a lovely dog, and she will be missed. I'll try to find comfort in the fact that she lived a long and happy life. I don't know exactly how old she was, but we had her for 9 years and she must have been 2 or 3 when she came to us (I explained how we came to adopt her in this post). Still, I'm going to feel her absence for a very long time.

  1. Oh Nymeth, I am so, so, so, so sorry! My heart is absolutely breaking for you! She was a beautiful girl, and I'm glad she got to spend so much of her life with you as I'm sure that made her a very happy girl as well. I wish I knew what to say, but I don't. I will be thinking of you though!

  2. Thank you, Debi. Sigh. I know she had more luck than many other dogs who never manage to find homes, but still, I wish I could have her around for even longer.

You know what breaks my heart? To see Maria sniffing around everywhere, looking for her. They were the best of friends, to the point that if I picked up Janiça in front of her, she'd start jumping around me, demanding that I return her friend immediately. I'm really not sure how these things are perceived by dogs, but to me she seems so sad and lost.

  3. Nymeth: I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I know I'd be heartbroken in your situation. I never have the right words in these types of situations though so I'm going to leave it at that. I hope you are doing alright.

  4. I'm sorry for your (and Maria's) loss, it's so hard to lose not just a pet, but a part of your family - a part of your life. I know you gave her a joyful life - and that the hardships she suffered before finding your family were long forgotten and all she knew was love and security.
I've lost many pets over the years, but I won't say "I know how you feel" because every relationship (with pets or people) is unique and special - but I do know that you're hurting and I'll keep you and your family in my prayers...

  12. I'm very sorry for your loss, Nymeth. Please know that my thoughts are with you. We love them so much and they leave such horribly huge holes behind when they go...

As for your other dog missing her, of course she does. Dogs grieve a loss just like humans. Just be sure to give her some extra love over the next while.

  16. I'm so sorry for your loss. It's heartbreaking to lose a member of the family like that. We went through a similar experience last year ... it took our other dog months to get over it. I wish the very best ... you'll be in my thoughts.

  17. Oh, Nymeth - what sad, sad news. She has such a sweet face! We are blessed to have our wonderful pets in our lives, aren't we?! It is such an awful loss, and as CJ says, they leave such horrible holes in your life when they go. Many hugs from Virginia!

  18. Nymeth--I am so sorry for your loss. My childhood cat, Mickey, suffered from renal failure and died the day after Christmas 11 years ago. Our animals are such a huge part of our lives and growing up and I hope you can continue to remember the great memories you have of Janica. Best wishes and hugs to you!

  22. Nymeth...I'm so deeply sorry. It sounds like Janiça had a wonderful life after coming to live with you, and no doubt left you with many happy memories.

There's nothing I can say except that I'm thinking of you. Give Maria lots of big hugs.

  24. I'm so sorry to hear this. I know how hard it is to lose your pet friends. I used to live in the country in Sicily and we lost many dogs because of poisoned meatballs or cars accidents. I was hearth-broken each time. I also had my own dog which I rescued when he was abandoned in a cardboard box with his sister. They were only a week or two old and his sister didn't survive. I had him for one year, then he died of leukemia. I was devasted.
My thoughts are with you now :)
    *hugs*

  29. Oh my, now my heart is breaking for Maria as well as for you! I try not to pretend that I know what a fellow creature is thinking and feeling. But I can't help but believe that dogs and cats and elephants and mice, etc. all have feelings, too. And Maria's loss is so immense. And in some ways I can't help but wonder if it's even worse for her, because she may not understand what's happened and she can't express her feelings to others in the way we can.
Not sure if I'm making any sense there, but bottom line, I just want you to know how much I'm thinking of you and Maria. I'm glad you have each other.

  30. I'm so sorry you are going through this. She was a beautiful dog and I'm glad you had so much time together. I know nothing I can say will really make you feel better, but know that I sympathize and will be thinking of you and your family.

  31. I'm beyond sorry to hear about this Nymeth. Big, bug hugs. She was such a beautiful, cute dog. I've had dogs my whole life and have always been a huge dog lover and it breaks my heart to hear new like this because I know how close we get to our pets. They are family. She had a wonderful life with you and you gave her the comfort throughout her life that she couldn't have found elsewhere. I'll be thinking of you.

  32. Really sorry to hear about your dog. Hope you are doing ok. My friends cat got run over recently and my dad's wife's cat had to be put down too, I am sure they sympathise with you as well. I am glad you have lots of fond memories to keep you going and it sounds like it was at least a peaceful passing.

  33. Becca, Iliana, Bookfool, Cath, Melody, Laura, Janicu, Literary Feline, Jessi, Jessica, Darla, Stephanie, shereadsbooks, Lightheaded, Quixotic, Deslily, Marg, Lisa, Lezlie, Care, Andrea and everyone else: Thank you so much for your comforting words. I really, really appreciate them.

Ken, as always you make a good point...each relationship is unique. I've lost many pets over the years as well, and that's exactly why it never gets any easier...because every experience is new. And I've been guilty of saying "I know how you feel", but you're right, one doesn't ever quite know. Thank you for your kind words.

CJ: I definitely will. She looks so sad still :( And thank you.

Dark Orpheus: I feel that it hasn't quite hit me yet that she's gone. I keep expecting to still find her walking around the backyard like she always would, or sleeping in her little bed.

Heather: Thank you...and I'm really sorry to hear you went through something similar.

Trish: I'm sorry to hear about Mickey. I do have great memories of her and I know that in time they'll be comforting, but right now it just feels so weird that she's gone.

Valentina: That's so sad :( Poor dog. But at least he had a happy year in your company. The roads here are extremely dangerous too... cats and dogs get run over all the time.

Debi: I think that they have emotional lives too...and I wonder the same as you. As sad as we feel about her death, at least we know exactly what happened and how it happened. But Maria just knows that her friend disappeared, and I wonder if not being able to make sense of things is even more distressing for her. She keeps sniffing the place where her little bed was :( But at least there's Farrusco, the dog we adopted a couple of months ago. Maria isn't very close to him yet (he's a hyperactive one-year-old who wants to play all the time, and sometimes she indulges him, but other times she runs out of patience and growls at him), but I think they'll get closer with time, and at least he's constant company for her. We spend as much time with her as possible, but we can't be with her all day like a dog buddy can...so I'm glad that at least she wasn't left all alone. And again, thank you for your kindness...it means a lot.

Chris, thank you. Yeah, they definitely become part of the family, and losing them never gets any easier :(

Rhinoa, thank you. It helps a little to know that she lived a long life. Even without the autoimmune anemia she wasn't likely to live more than another year or so, the vet said. I'm sorry to hear about the cats...and yes, at least she went peacefully...she wasn't in pain or anything, unlike those poor animals that get hit by cars

  35. I am so sorry to hear about your dog! That was me last year, so I know exactly how you feel. I still miss my dog at times because she was such a big part of my life over the years. At least she is no longer suffering, though. That actually made me feel better with my dog. Probably because my other dog got hit by a car and she did suffer...

  36. So sorry to hear about Janica. It is so hard to lose a loved pet. Hugs.

  37. I'm so sorry, Nymeth. She went so suddenly and you didn't really get time to prepare yourself - or her or Maria - to say goodbye. Sending you warm ehugs, and thinking of you.

  38. I am so very sorry to hear this, Nymeth. Pets are such an important part of our lives and the act of losing one is so profoundly painful. I didn't realize how much until it happened to us last year. My heart goes out to you and your family. It is great that your dog lived a long life and was no doubt loved and pampered, but it is still hard to have that missing spot in your family. All my best!

  39. Dear Nymeth,
I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. It's never easy, no matter what, and you're never prepared for that emptiness. My thoughts are with you.

  43. I send you my condolences. I have an older dog as well, who has been struggling with an unknown skin ailment that turned out to be related to hypothyroidism. Who knew.

Cherish the memories you had with her.

  45. Maree, Terri B, Susan, Carl, Robin, Anna, Bookchronicle, Bethany and Tanabata, thank you so much for your kind words. They really mean a lot.

Kailana: I remember what you went through with Sandy well :( But it is comforting to think that they didn't suffer..some of my cats were hit by cars too, and one of them actually made it back to the house where he died from a dreadful head wound...and all silently in the middle of the night. I don't even want to think of the pain he must have felt

Serena, I'm sorry to hear that...I really hope your dog gets better.

    And again, thank you everyone.
